Building 101

Hey everyone,

We get requests all of the time from people wanting know how we come up with some of our designs.
Below are a few guidelines that we like to follow when building lots:

You have to design everything - Start out with your concept..  What do you want to build? Once you've got that figured out, find the most believable lot in the world for that build (believable as in:  the lots location/detail and the surrounding lots/details, help sell the overall concept to the viewer).

Authors have that saying, "a good book isn't just written, it is designed" - architecture is no different...

Everything must have a specific purpose - This is a big point that we'd like to highlight.  We see designs everyday that are amazing.  However, those designs are often ruined by "filler" (filler is the term we use to describe rooms/decor/objects/etc, that don't make sense with the overall concept).

If you feel that your lot calls for a specific design, make sure that it flows well with the rest of the lot.  Simple, but often overlooked.

Research -  Do your research.  Once you have your initial concept down, check out images on google, or architecture websites like www.houzz.com - houzz has tons of interior and exterior photos of amazing homes in all styles...  Highly recommended.

When looking at these websites,  be sure to pay attention to ever detail.  What color schemes are used?  Do they mix textures (wood, stone, fabric, etc)?  How is it landscaped?  etc...

If you follow these basic guidelines, you will notice a definite improvement in your overall design.
But keep in mind, that these are just that, a guide...  Not a set of rules to always be followed.

Enjoy and happy building!
